EIP Report: Toxic Mercury Emissions from the Nation’s Power Plants Remain at Dangerously High Levels

U.S. power plants reported over 72,000 pounds of mercury air emissions released in 2009, despite the availability of new pollution control technologies.  Texas is home to the lion’s share of dirty mercury polluters, accounting for over 15 percent of nationwide mercury emissions, with Pennsylvania at a distant second with 6.4 percent.  Facilities owned by Luminant (formerly TXU), Southern Company, RRI Energy (formerly Reliant), American Electric Power, and the State of Nebraska top the list of the dirtiest mercury polluters.
