"Left Behind" documents how power plant emissions have increased in key states and at forty one plants, and reviews their health impacts. Power plants are responsible for two thirds of the sulfur dioxide and one quarter of the nitrogen oxide pollution in the United States. These power plant emissions form fine particles that are linked to heart disease, lung cancer, respiratory ailments and more than 20,000 premature deaths every year. While the 1990 Clean Air Act has helped reduce sulfur dioxide by about 1/3 nationwide, progress has been uneven.
