Eric Schaeffer, Executive Director Eric V. Schaeffer has served as director of the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) since its establishment in March of 2002, after resigning from the US Environmental Protection Agency to protest White House political interference with efforts to enforce the Clean Air Act. Before joining EIP, Eric had served as director of EPA's Office of Civil Enforcement, where he received a Presidential Rank Award recognizing his outstanding achievement as a member of the Senior Executive Service. He also received the prestigious John Marshall award from the Justice Department for his leadership in negotiating an industry-wide cleanup of petroleum refineries. Eric's career at EPA began in 1990, and included an appointment as special assistant to the Deputy Administrator. Prior his service at EPA, Eric worked as an environmental attorney for two and a half years at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, and six years on Capitol Hill working for various members of Congress. Eric received his law degree from Georgetown University in 1987, and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1976.

Ilan Levin, Senior Attorney Ilan Levin joined EIP in 2004, after practicing environmental law with the Austin, Texas firm Henry & Levin, where he represented landowners and conservation groups in legal and legislative battles. Prior to that, as staff attorney for a legislative agency, Ilan played a key role in developing and drafting state anti-pollution laws. Ilan lives in Austin with his wife Kelly Haragan and their daughter Cassidy.

Benjamin Wakefield, Senior Attorney Ben Wakefield is Counsel for the Environmental Integrity Project, where he focuses on litigation and policy issues under the Clean Air Act regarding oil refineries and coal-fired power plants. Before joining EIP, Mr. Wakefield served as an attorney with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; as the environmental enforcement attorney with Trial Lawyers for Public Justice; and as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Robert W. Redding in the Oregon State Circuit Court. Mr. Wakefield has also worked in private practice in the areas of criminal defense and food & drug law. Mr. Wakefield earned his J.D. and Environmental & Natural Resources Law Certificate from Lewis & Clark Law School in 1996, and his B.A., Phi Beta Kappa with honors, from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1991.

Jennifer Peterson, Attorney Jennifer Peterson joined the Environmental Integrity Project as Counsel in 2007. Prior to joining EIP, she interned for the Sierra Club Environmental Law Program in San Francisco and worked as a student clinician for the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Clinic in South Royalton, Vermont. Ms. Peterson graduated magna cum laude from Vermont Law School in 2007, earning her J.D. and Master of Studies in Environmental Law. She graduated cum laude from Eckerd College with a BA in Environmental Studies and Anthropology in 1999.

L. Layla Mansuri, Attorney Layla Mansuri joined EIP in 2008, after practicing environmental and administrative law with the Austin, Texas firm Lowerre & Frederick, where she represented landowners and conservation groups. In addition, Ms. Mansuri clerked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Environmental Justice, Public Citizen of Texas, Inc., and the Environmental Defense Fund. Layla Mansuri earned her J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law and graduated summa cum laude from Texas A&M University with a B.S. in Bioenvironmental Science. Layla lives in Austin with her husband, Mehdi, and their cat, Boo.

Jessica Werber, Attorney Jessica Werber joined the Environmental Integrity Project as Counsel in January 2008. Jessica's work focuses on Clean Water Act permitting violations of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) in Iowa. Prior to joining EIP, Jessica worked on Clean Air Act appellate cases with the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) in Diamond Bar, CA, environmental crimes with the City Attorney of Los Angeles, Brownfields (CERCLA) projects with Linowes and Blocher LLP in Bethesda, MD, and water conservation/ecotourism in the country of El Salvador. Jessica earned her J.D. degree from Vermont Law School in 2007 and her B.S. in Environmental Systems from the University of California, San Diego in 2004. Jessica's interest in environmental science and law began when she participated in Columbia University's Earth Systems Field School at the Biosphere 2 Center (Tucson, AZ) in 1999.

Tracy Lucas, Office Operations Manager Tracy Lucas is the Office Operations Manager for the Environmental Integrity Project. Even though her duties are primarily administrative, she is an integral part of keeping the office functioning in a efficient manner. Prior to EIP, she worked for a Spanish language educational organization and other environmental nonprofits. She is well versed in Spanish, has a degree in photography and is currently working towards a degree in English. She is extremely concerned about the environment and endeavors to educate children about the need to recycle.
