Refined Hazard

Petroleum refineries are a major source of pollution in the United States, releasing a significant amount of carcinogenic pollutants into the air Americans breathe. Although petroleum refineries are the backbone of America’s oil-based economy, the pollution released from refineries can pose a serious risk of harm to human health. In this report, we use the data from the EPA’s Toxics Release Inventory to catalogue refinery air emissions of certain pollutants that are known or suspected to cause cancer.
