Clean Air Advocates Urge PA Not to Approve Gas Processing Plant

The Environmental Integrity Project, allied clean air organizations and residents of Western Pennsylvania have asked the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to deny issuing any permits for the construction of a proposed natural gas processing plant in Washington County.

The MarkWest company’s proposed Harmon Creek Gas Plant in Smith Township would likely release more air pollution than the company has estimated in its permit applications, which have technical deficiencies and inconsistencies, according to comments that the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) submitted to the state agency on Sept. 15.

“MarkWest’s failure to accurately and fully disclose the scope of this project and its decisions to instead present only half the planned build-out renders this application incomplete and potentially misleading,” the comments say.

The letter to DEP was submitted by EIP, Earthworks, the Clean Air Council, and local residents Cathy Lodge, Brenda Vance, and Nolan Vance.
